Margaret and Dale Vermillion are former Peace Corps volunteers who purchased the Vermillion Ranch in 1971. Relocating from Boston, Massachusetts, with their three sons, they had grown attached to living near water and were thrilled to find this extraordinary property at the confluence of the Yellowstone River and Sweetgrass Creek. The Vermillion family proceeded to improve the structures on the property, recreate much of the river habitat, protect the land with an easement so that it can never be developed, and raise their sons as avid fly-fishermen. Today those sons own and operate SweetwaterTravel.com, providing experienced and jovial guided fishing trips the world over.
 

Moved by the privacy, beauty, and solitude afforded by this special location, the Vermillions decided to share it. They wanted to provide a place where families and close friends could connect with the ones they love while disconnecting from the chaos of the world for a while. So they opened their home and created guest rentals from the two historic buildings on the homestead. As Margaret Vermillion puts it, “This place is about freedom. It’s about getting away, relaxing, thinking, peace, roaming. There’s something about this place that teaches people, and especially kids, about nature and the natural environment.”
 

The Vermillion Ranch is not a dude ranch – there are no activities scheduled. It’s a go-with-the-flow, low-key environment on unique river habitat. The Vermillions’ philosophy is that if you love a place, you have to take care of it. You have to give something back.  Their deep respect for the environment, wildlife, and space is apparent when you walk through the Ranch and experience what they’ve done to conserve this unusual property. It’s more than just a fly-fishing destination – it’s a distinctive and historic slice of heaven that provides privacy and an off-the-beaten-path feel for those who appreciate place and a relaxing place to connect.
